In the pages of this collection, this piece, the verses intertwine like threads weaving a tapestry of emotions and thoughts, contexts, time, and memory.
Each poem is a “trip” through the shades of the soul from the urban slum suburb that we all carry within. Exploring the deepest corners of existence and its daily life. “The auditory keys to the enigma.” In this lyrical, symbolic compendium, feelings unfold like petals of a delicate garden, of that contemporary poetic imagination, and words become whispers that seek to resonate in the reader’s heart and their stardust. “Does the radio sound still persist , the small voice of that young street vendor, gently squeaking in your memory?”
Throughout these lines, a universe of poetic images unfolds, capturing fleeting moments, passing thoughts, pigments in the photograph, and eternal yearnings. Poetry and the communal. Like a reimagining of “everyday life.”
The metaphor, a sorrowful contemplation, and musicality intermingle to create a symphony of words, where each verse is a note that contributes to the melody of the whole. “The voice is the afterlife of the sonero, populating the universe with ghosts.”
This collection invites immersion into reflection, “howling out of tune,” to be carried away by the beauty of poetic expression and to discover the magic that resides in the unique combination of words and graphic art.
Each poem is an open window into the soul of the author, into the soul of the progenitors of this jewel… it is like an invitation to explore the vast landscape of human emotions through the poetic lens.
In the dance of ghosts, whispers remain,
their voices, faint and always muffled.
With ax and machete, the charming echo,
time, delirium that grandfather danced.
In the mystical corner of Río Piedras,
black holes weave their sorcery.
A discourse is woven in the almanac,
spirituality, a ritual in its melody.
Moon-smile dancer,
the grandfather finds inspiration. He is a star.
In mysticism, the connection endures,
like an eternal and sublime song.
“What else fucking thing is a poem, this poem, if not another spheroid machine assembling signs that levitate over the concave skins of the bongo-playing world?” A sociological reverie.
“Terrorism is the systematic use of violence to achieve an objective through terror, and it constitutes one of the main strategies of dictatorial governments to remain in power. The character of this terrorism from below originates in the search for greater justice.” -Ignacio Martín-Baró.
In conclusion, those verses from the collection and their imagery resonate with the wisdom of Ignacio Martín-Baró, reminding us that becoming aware of our identity and individual resources must translate into organizational forms. Only then, by bringing the interests of the popular majorities to the stage of social confrontation (poetry as an aesthetic of liberation), can we weave a collective poem that speaks of justice, equality, and community empowerment. These verses are not just poetic lines, but also a call to action, a symphony that invites social transformation and the pursuit of a more equitable and just world.
“Taut leather awaiting the whipping zaoco” broken chains. Patronages, other urban slums. All captives. The struggle for justice has no expiration date. Death becomes our sister and poetry mercy itself. And mercy requires commitment and purpose. A soul-(al)manac. A piece, a portrait, an instant of interwoven pages. “They are bursts of thunderous light overflowing in a stream of ectoplasm, its eventual horizon toward nothingness.”
*I thought the package wouldn’t arrive, but it didn’t get lost despite the mistake. Great, Juan Carlos Quiñones.
