Conference: “ Una mirada sobre la presencia Canaria en las palabras y expresiones puertorriqueñas” By Dr. Iván L. Torres

 March 18, 2024

The presence of the Canary Islands in Puerto Rico has influenced Puerto Rican words and expressions.

Immigrant groups brought their idiosyncrasies to the island. It's also a genealogical matter.

There are records that corroborate the "first families" whose descendants are from the Canary Islands. Families that mostly came from the Canary Islands.

All of this aspects in the context of the Spanish Crown.

This leads us to ask: Who are we? Roots, ancestors from different places, immigrants.

Understanding this leads us to understand our national identity.

Words like "jibaro",  phrases like "ni  ni fa" come from the Canarian tradition. The Canarian presence in Puerto Rico reminds us that OUR country has a rich culture and encompasses different immigrations that have influenced our words and expressions.
