Luis Palés Matos (1898)

The recent commemoration of poet Luis Palés Matos’ birth at the Museo Casa Cautiño was a powerful testament to Puerto Rico’s rich literary and cultural heritage. The event brought together poetry lovers, scholars, and community members in an intimate celebration that highlighted the lasting impact of Palés Matos on Caribbean literature. A key moment was the visit from his great-granddaughter, Claudia Becerra, who delivered a compelling presentation on his life and work, offering a deeply personal perspective on his literary legacy.

Poets and performers recited Palés Matos’ verses, filling the venue with the rhythm and emotion that define his poetry. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of a portrait of the poet, painted in 1994 by artist and former high school art teacher Rosita Rodríguez. This gesture, facilitated by librarian Margarita and others who have dedicated themselves to preserving Puerto Rican culture, underscored the collective effort to honor and remember the island’s literary figures. The event’s success was a testament to the dedication of the Tricentennial Committee, led by Dr. Alexis Tirado, as well as the contributions of Tourism Director Lillian Velázquez and her team.

More than just a tribute, the gathering was a reminder of the power of art and community. Seeing so many people come together to celebrate poetry and history was uplifting and healing. The event demonstrated that literature is not only a reflection of the past but a living, breathing force that continues to inspire. With another cultural event planned for April, this celebration of Puerto Rican heritage is far from over.
