Culebra’s Victory (1975)
“This is one of the famous abandoned U.S. military tanks on Playa Flamenco in Culebra, Puerto Rico. These rusted tanks, now covered in graffiti and artwork, are remnants of the U.S. Navy’s use of the island as a bombing range until 1975, when protests led to their withdrawal. Today, they stand as symbols of resistance and Puerto Rican heritage.”
Culebra’s Victory
Fifty years have passed, yet the waves still whisper,
Of white sands kissed by a struggle unforgotten.
Crystal-clear waters reflect the scars of war,
While the old tanks rest, covered in colors of defiance.
A peaceful protest echoed against the might of steel,
Culebrenses stood as David before the towering Goliath.
Their voices, like the tides, relentless and strong,
Drove the war hawks from their island’s shores.
Flamenco Beach, a paradise reclaimed,
Where history lingers in the whispers of the sea.
